I started doing brief and open-ended individual and couple’s therapy over 40 years ago, and I’ve been providing supervision and case consultation for about as long. I’m fluent in humanistic/existential theory (especially Horney), behaviorism, systems theory, cognitive behaviorism, and most psychoanalytic dialects, including ego psychology, object relations, self psychology, and intersubjectivity. I received a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan in 1978, and I am a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology (Clinical).
After practicing full-time for nearly 25 years, I became a tenured college professor, teaching in the Graduate School of Professional Psychology at the University of Denver for 20 years. Having to explain to trainees what to do in therapy has made me a better supervisor and consultant. I’m the sole or senior author of six psychology books, three of them about therapy. I’ve blogged for Psychology Today since 2013 with over 3 million page views. I’m extremely proud to have officiated three weddings of former students.
